Chitosan Block absorption of dietary fat
  • Relatively safe, but general opinion and studies have shown it is unlikely to cause weight loss
  • Can cause constipation, bloating and other gastrointestinal complaints
  • Long-term effects unknown
Clinical study on 250 adults, with an average body mass index of 35.5, to receive either 3g of chitosan daily or a placebo for 24 weeks reported that the chitosan group lost an average of 0.4kg compared to a 0.2 kg gain in the placebo group, "but the effects were small"
Chromium Reduces body fat and builds muscle
  • Relatively safe, but unlikely to cause weight loss
  • Long-term effects unknown
In one study, 233 people randomly received placebo or chromium (200mcg or 400mcg daily), for 72 days, without receiving weight loss, dietary or exercise guidance. Those receiving placebo only lost 0.4kg over the 72 days. Those receiving 200mcg or 400mcg chromium picolinate lost an average of 1.26 kg.
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) Reduces body fat, decreases appetite and builds muscle
  • Might decrease body fat and increase muscle, but isn't likely to reduce total body weight
  • Can cause diarrhea, indigestion and other gastrointestinal problems
Studies have shown that although CLA triggers dramatic fat loss in rodents, the effect is less pronounced in humans. Some human clinical trials have reported promising results, while others have found little or no fat-loss effect. A few studies have reported adverse effects of CLA on lipid profiles, markers of oxidative stress, and glucose handling.
Ephedra Decreases appetite
  • Can cause high blood pressure, heart rate irregularities, sleeplessness, seizures, heart attacks, strokes and even death
  • Banned from the marketplace because of safety concerns, but may still be legally sold as a tea
  • Despite the ban,
    many ephedra products
    still sold on the Internet
- Studies have shown that Ephedra increase the risk of nausea, vomiting, jitteriness, and palpitations.

Hoodia Decreases appetite
  • No known side effects but no conclusive evidence to support their claims so far.
The data related to clinical trials in humans is very limited and much more clinical research is needed in order to conclude if it is safe for long term use.
Caffeine Reduces Weight
  • Caffeine does act as
    a diuretic, but it
    doesn't decrease
    body fat.
